I arrived in Kuba for a month-long residency with the goal of creating compactness—both in my methodology and in the final presentation of my work. The immateriality of paper, something that is at once dense and light, became a metaphor for this pursuit.
During my time at Kuba, I made my own paper from scraps found in the village, worked in the wood workshop with its doors opening toward the meadow, and spent long hours in the studio, seeking to make compact all the open vastness that exists outside. This exploration of weight through material could not have occurred without the freeing, open environment of Kuba—the vegetable garden, the singing birds, walks in the woods, moments of rain and thunder. My time there became a continuous dialogue between nature, material, and making, as they moved between states of weightlessness and gravity, thickness and thinness, density and lightness.
